From Small Scale Atomistic Behavior to theMaterials Revolution of Entire Nations

Event Series (See All)

September 18 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Dr. Kory D. Burns

On Friday, September 18th, at 11 AM, Prof. Kory D. Burns from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at University of Virginia will present a seminar titled “From Small Scale Atomistic Behavior to the Materials Revolution of Entire Nations” The event will be hosted by Prof. Jerald Dumas and held in-person in the JSNN Auditorium.

ABSTRACT: A roadmap of how we can build materials one atom at a time using advancements in ion beam technology and transmission
electron microscopy (TEM) will be showcased in this presentation. Our primary emphasis will be placed on quantum
materials and understanding quantum behavior in heterogeneous materials, closely linking the impact of fundamental
research to real world technological integration. Ultimately, we directly prove how a treatment of fundamental physics is the
driver behind development of the first quantum computing platform in Africa.
