JSNN Scientists discover a new material for cleansing wastewater from Lithium – a harmful, yet valuable element
Dr. Rathnayake, an Associate Professor of Nanoscience, and Sheeba Dawood, a PhD Candidate in Nanoscience, have devised a new way to remove lithium from petroleum wastewater. Their process involves developing a proprietary lithium-trapping filter derived from a renewable resource. The filter consists of an electrospun polymer designed to trap lithium. The project is a result of funding from the National Science Foundation. Dawood was recognized as the 2020 UNCG Student Entrepreneur of the Year in recognition of this important work.
