Dr. Kyle Nowlin, JSNN’s Advanced Microscopy Guru

Advanced microscopy comprises an array of imaging techniques that enable the visualization of samples at the nanometer and subnanometer scale.  Electron and scanning probe microscopy techniques such as SEM, TEM, and AFM are essential tools to many students at the JSNN who conduct research in fields as diverse as synthetic biology, physics, and materials science.  Enter Dr. Kyle Nowlin, who was a member of JSNN’s first class of graduate students (Nanoscience Ph.D. ’16) after graduating with a degree in physics from UNCG (B.S. ’10).  Now a Research Associate and manager of the core facility for advanced microscopy at the JSNN, Dr. Nowlin maintains the school’s collection of advanced microscopes, trains students, faculty, and other researchers on their use, and carries out contract work for industrial partners.

A nice profile of Dr. Nowlin’s 15-year story as a student, researcher, mentor, and manager at the JSNN recently appeared online in the UNCG News:
