STEPS ExPLORERS
STEPS ExPlorers Program
Welcome to the homepage of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (N.C. A&T) and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where innovation and interdisciplinary research converge to tackle pressing global challenges. In partnership with the Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) center, an NSF-funded initiative, JSNN is committed to advancing the boundaries of knowledge in nanoscience while addressing critical issues in phosphorus sustainability. Our mission extends beyond traditional education and research; we aim to inspire the next generation of scientists through initiatives like the ExPlorers Summer Program. We foster a deep understanding of science and its societal impact by engaging K-12 students in hands-on learning experiences that connect STEM concepts to real-world problems in phosphorus sustainability. Join us in our journey to explore, innovate, and create a more sustainable future for all.

The Explorers experience
Problem Based Learning
Through problem based learning (PBL) students are exposed to real-life scenarios centered around phosphorus sustainability that allows them to apply critical thinking skills, and gain research and laboratory experience. These experiences lead to effective collaborations and innovative practices.
Making Impactful connections
We make classroom lessons become reality by connecting students to different areas of nanotechnology, phosphorus, and sustainability. The ExPlorers get the opportunity to visit local farms and hear from various stakeholders who are directly influenced by phosphorus sustainability. Students participate in impactful discussion centered around the necessity of phosphorus in industry, agriculture, government, communities, and much more.
Preparing for the future
To continue the growth and STEM experience, STEPS ExPlorers continue to build connections with universities and expand their skills as effective researchers in STEM. We continue to build relationships through conferences, poster and oral presentations that establish confidence and self- efficacy among students.
